Erythrocyte Sedimentation Tubes work by binding calcium ions<\/strong>, thereby preventing blood clotting. One of the primary types is the buffered sodium citrate tube<\/strong>, in which the ratio of blood to citrate<\/strong> is precisely adjusted to 4:1.<\/p>

Sample Collection Using Sedimentation Tubes<\/strong><\/span><\/p>

After venous blood is collected, it must be mixed thoroughly. When held in a vertical position<\/strong>, erythrocytes gradually settle toward the bottom. The distance they travel from the top over a specific period indicates the Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR)<\/strong>.<\/p>

The sedimentation process typically follows these phases:<\/p>

  1. First 10 minutes<\/strong>: minimal settling, formation of rouleaux<\/p><\/li>

  2. Next 40 minutes<\/strong>: constant settling rate<\/p><\/li>

  3. Final 10 minutes<\/strong>: reduced velocity, erythrocytes accumulate at the bottom<\/p><\/li><\/ol>

    The collected blood should not be stored for long before testing, and measurements must be conducted in controlled laboratory conditions<\/strong>, away from heat or environmental interference.<\/p>

    Standard Conditions for Blood Collection<\/strong><\/span><\/p>

    To ensure accurate test results, the following standard pre-test conditions are recommended:<\/p>

    1. Blood draws are typically performed between 08:00 and 11:00 AM<\/strong><\/p><\/li>

    2. Avoid strenuous physical activity for at least 3 days prior<\/strong><\/p><\/li>

    3. Abstain from alcohol consumption for at least 24 hours prior<\/strong><\/p><\/li>

    4. Fast for 10\u2013<\/strong>12 hours<\/strong> before the test<\/p><\/li>

    5. Avoid food and drink (except water) after 10:00 PM the night before<\/strong><\/p><\/li>

    6. Maintain a consistent posture (e.g., seated) during blood collection to ensure comparable results<\/p><\/li>

    7. Take deep breaths and relax<\/strong> 10 minutes before the draw<\/p><\/li><\/ol>

      Post-Collection Guidelines<\/strong><\/p>

      1. Avoid prolonged or excessive use of a tourniquet<\/p><\/li>

      2. Do not shake<\/strong> sedimentation tubes after collection<\/p><\/li>

      3. Avoid rapid aspiration<\/strong> when transferring blood between containers<\/p><\/li>

      4. Do not apply heat or cold<\/strong> to the sample<\/p><\/li>

      5. Do not interrupt centrifugation<\/strong> once started<\/p><\/li>

      6. Allow sufficient time for serum separation<\/strong> (maximum wait time: 2 hours)<\/p><\/li>

      7. Ensure the puncture site is dry<\/strong> and avoid hematoma areas<\/p><\/li><\/ol>

        Failure to follow these steps may lead to inaccurate results<\/strong> or increased hemolysis<\/strong>.<\/p>
