Trace Element Tubes
Trace element tubes are used to analyze very small quantities of elements that are essential for the proper functioning of the human body. These elements, present in trace amounts, are crucial for cellular activity and are therefore referred to as “trace elements.” Blood testing is one of the most effective methods for detecting trace element imbalances, which may arise due to various health conditions. Depending on the clinical indication, healthcare providers may request different types of blood collection tubes — one of which is the trace element tube, identified by its dark blue cap.
These tubes are used in venous blood collection and help determine element deficiencies, aiding physicians in selecting appropriate treatments. They can also detect excessive or unadvised intake of supplements such as vitamins and minerals.
Features of Trace Element Tubes
Vacuum-sealed and single-use
Available in different volumes and sizes upon request
Manufactured in three variants:
Clot Activator (Material: PET)
K2EDTA (Material: Glass)
Sodium Heparin (Material: Glass)
Designed to be free from metal contaminants
Primarily used in trace element analysis and toxicology testing
Sample Preparation for Trace Element Testing
Use 13×100 mm dark blue-capped tubes, filled with 6 mL of blood
Do not shake the tube; gently invert it 5–6 times
Allow the blood to clot naturally for 30 minutes to 2 hours
Centrifuge the tube at 1500×g for 10 minutes
Transfer the serum into a new labeled tube
Do not use separator tubes or tubes containing gel
Vacuum Blood Collection System
In the past, vacuum blood collection systems used reusable glass tubes, which posed challenges in storage and carried safety risks due to breakage. These tubes required manual cleaning and sterilization, and were not single-use.
To reduce these risks, disposable PET tubes were developed. Over time, vacuum PET tubes became standard to minimize errors in blood testing. Today, vacuum blood collection tubes, butterfly needles, needle tips, and holders are widely used as single-use components in modern healthcare settings. This ensures that samples are safely transported to laboratories for accurate testing.
